IN THE STUDIO -Â ATHENS GA
TURTLEWORKS ORIGINS
I am a biochemist who turned to art in order to combat the effects of trauma and loss. To help inspire my significant other’s artistic side as a therapeutic tool in managing an illness, a room in our house was set up as an art space around 2009. In order to set an example, I started spending increasing amounts of time at home in that room. As a consequence, art became therapy for my own struggles associated with her disease. I continue to explore the therapeutic aspects of art, and that room in the house has expanded to studio space in downtown Athens.
My work celebrates life in bright colors. Also, as a scientist, I see beauty in the discovery and explanation of scientific processes. Thus, many paintings are influenced by scientific principles and presentations. The goal is to inspire others to discover beauty in life as well as science.
As a kid growing up in the Bronx I always aspired to be a graffiti artist. However, due to the lack of subways in the South, I had to find other media. I primarily utilize acrylics on tarpaper- allowing flexibility for carving into the paint and adding texture.
